What Are Fire Doors and Do You Need Them in San Jose?

Whether you own a home in San Jose, or a business, you may come across the idea of fire doors. What are they? You might be asking. More importantly, are they something that you need to consider getting for your home or business?

San Jose is one of the more affluent cities throughout the United States and is the tenth largest city in the country. Being in Northern California, it sometimes seems that we are impervious to the same types of risks that are common to our neighbors to the south. Fires happen no matter where you are. You could live in the Northeast and have had a ton of rain and snow through the winter and spring and then, with a relatively low humidity index all of a sudden find yourself facing the risk of fires breaking out.

Just because we live in this great region of the country, that doesn’t mean that we can be lax when it comes to fires and protecting ourselves, our families, and our businesses to the ravages of this natural event.

There are a number of fire codes that are in place within San Jose and the surrounding areas that are designed to ensure that homeowners as well as business patrons and employees are protected as much as they can be from fires. However, if a fire breaks out, there are only so many things that can be done to protect buildings and property.

Installing fire doors is one of them and they aren’t just for business.

What are fire doors?

Fire doors are any type of fire resistance door that is designed to prevent a fire from spreading through the building, whether it’s a house or commercial business.

In many homes throughout the country, at least more recent construction homes, when the walls are built, they might use the traditional two by four wooden studs, or they might rely on the metal studs. Metal studs are more likely reserved for businesses and commercial property, though.

When wood is used for the wall frames, a fire wall is installed. This is a short piece of wood that is place toward the middle of the wall, halfway up the ceiling. It runs parallel to the top and bottom portions of the frame and they are designed to slow the progression of a fire through the walls. They are not designed to stop a fire from spreading, though. However, fire burns quickly behind the walls because of insulation and the paper that it uses to hold it together.

When the fire reaches the fire wall, it will slow down. This could force it to burn through the sheetrock and then begin spreading throughout the home. Why would this be important? Fire that is contained and burns through the walls (behind the walls) isn’t going to release smoke into the home and the fire detectors might not alert the people inside of what’s happening. Also, when the fire slows down by the fire wall, it helps to contain the fire to one portion of the house for a longer period of time, allowing people more time to get out safely, and allowing firefighters more time to fight the fire and put it out.

With fire doors, it’s the same concept. When a fire is feeding, it is consuming its resources. That means that it’s constantly going to seek out more fuel in the form of wood, anything that will burn, and oxygen. By relying on fire doors, the business or home owner could help to slow the spread of the fire throughout the structure.

How do fire doors work?

The fire doors are made from a fire resistant material. This does not mean that they are fireproof, but that they are fire resistant. They will make the fire slow down and this could help to keep the fire from getting to oxygen, which will also help to keep it from getting even hotter and burning more quickly.

Why would you need fire doors for your business or home?

Most homes are not required by law to have fire doors installed. This doesn’t mean that homeowners can’t benefit by having them in their home. Where would they be ideally placed in the home? Fire doors could be ideal as kitchen doors, since the kitchen is one of the most common places where fire breaks out. Having these type of doors protecting the kitchen could actually protect or even save much of the rest of the house.

They also might be ideal as bedroom doors. This could allow your family the chance to safely get out of the house in the event of a fire.

What about businesses? Depending on the type of business and building that you may have, you might benefit from fire doors. You may also be required by law and fire codes to have them installed. Where they would need to be installed would be determined by the city ordinance or fire marshal.

Anywhere that there is a potential risk of fire breaking out, or in a location that the fire could be contained with the installation of fire doors, would make ideal places to add them.

What if your business isn’t required to install fire doors? Does that mean that you don’t need to think any more about it? You don’t, but you could save money on insurance rates through some providers if you have these fire doors installed in your business.
